About the Presentation - Harm caused by the misuse of opioids has become a public health emergency. Everyone, from family members to healthcare providers, can participate in a team approach to protecting the safety of patients receiving chronic opioid therapy. This program highlights laws and practice guidelines targeted to opioid safety, and reviews strategies for effective team-based patient care.

Presentation Objectives

  1. Describe recent initiatives on opioid safety
  2. Adhere to federal and state laws and practice guidelines for opioids
  3. Implement a targeted risk management strategy
  4. Adopt a team-based culture for treating patients with chronic opioid therapy

About the Speaker - Walter L. Fitzgerald, Jr., BPharm, MS, JD is the Dean and Professor of the South College School of Pharmacy.  Dr. Fitzgerald has over three decades of educating pharmacy students and practitioners as well as other allied health profession students in the State of Tennessee. With extensive experience in healthcare issues that focus on social and administrative sciences, law and ethics, Tennessee State medication review and evaluation process, professional development and post graduate education, Dr. Fitzgerald has offered practitioners the guidance and tools needed for successful practice and optimal patient care. He has held an academic appointment at four colleges of pharmacy and served in a variety of administrative and consultant roles to the pharmaceutical industry and healthcare organizations.  Dr. Fitzgerald is nationally recognized expert who is often invited for speaking engagements and presentations at scientific sessions of professional associations and continuous professional education seminars. Dr. Fitzgerald has received many prestigious awards such as the University of Tennessee National Alumni Association Public Service Award and Tom C. Sharp, Sr. Pharmacist of the Year Award by Tennessee Pharmacists Association.
